Longing for Love

Longing for Love

Back in the 1940s and ’50s, a medical doctor by the name of René Spitz conducted a number of experiments with orphaned children. In one study, babies were cared for by nurses who changed their diapers, fed them regularly, and made sure they were warm, but otherwise these infants received little or no interaction or […]

The Three Sources of Happiness

A couple of years ago I started on a journey to understand happiness. It’s a concept that has been well studied in the past fifteen years. Social scientists have learned a lot about the mental strategies of happy people, strategies which can be used by anyone who wants to increase their happiness and well-being.In particular, […]

My State of Overwhelm

My State of Overwhelm

Yesterday I fell into a state of overwhelm. I’ve had some personal/family worries going on plus a number of significant and unpredicted work projects that landed on me in the past week, which not only raised my level of anxiety but are also squeezing me to get more done in a relatively short period of time.My initial reaction was to feel immobilized, not knowing where to start or how to proceed in dealing with these challenges. It seemed like they were all not only big but of equal importance. So I spent my day shifting my attention back and forth from one task to another, in the end feeling quite unproductive and emotionally unsettled.

The Last Shall Be First

The Last Shall Be First

I’m a member of the Colorado Master’s Running Association. I joined the club about four years ago and love the monthly Saturday morning races. Of course, usually I run. However, last Saturday I volunteered to staff a water station for the 10k race along a river trail. I was the only volunteer at a water table […]

Overcoming Fear and Self-Doubt

Overcoming Fear and Self-Doubt

In my last blog post (http://www.theheroschoice.com/2015/03/26/deal-with-troubles/), I gave you a method for handling whatever is troubling you. Essentially, the method is to stop ignoring or distracting yourself from a troubling situation and face it. This means being fully present to your inner experience (emotions and thoughts) which are triggered by the situation without acting them […]

How to Deal with Whatever is Troubling You

How to Deal with Whatever is Troubling You

We all have things that trouble us—situations or circumstances that are undesired and cause us distress in the form of anger or frustration, fear or anxiety, sadness or depression, guilt or inadequacy. Some of these situations are temporary, but others are long-term or even permanent and may rob us of our vitality and well-being. Here […]

Intentionality

Intentionality

Definition of Intentionality During the past several weeks, I’ve suggested a number of strategies to help you become present to your moment by moment experience. A final strategy I want to teach on this important topic is “intentionality” which is a powerful declaration about how you intend to “show up” in some moment of time. […]

Practicing Mindfulness

Practicing Mindfulness

One of the most powerful ways to be present is the practice of mindfulness, which is paying attention to your moment by moment experience in a non-judgmental way. There are two important components of mindfulness. The first is conscious attention to your immediate experience including what is going on in your mind, body and surroundings. […]

The Hero’s Choice is a very powerful and compelling story. It will make you smile and it will also move you to tears. The writing style and story line reminds me of Og Mandino’s books. If you love his books you will surely love this one

As a counselor who uses positive psychology, this has been a very enlightening course; not only for use in future sessions, but also on a personal level as I did the exercises. My only regret is coming to the end. Loved the engaging teaching style.”

Gavriella K

student in Claiming Your Power to Live a Happy and Abundant Life

The course is short and concise as the author defines a process with actionable steps and guidelines for handling difficult conversations. In the last sections, there are some common scenarios in which you can see how the whole process comes into play and recognize the notions outlined in the first part. Before taking the course, I was clueless on how to even approach such a discussion, but now I feel like I have the notions and the tools to improve my confrontational skills.

student in Performance Management: Confronting Poor Performance

Prior to your training, I had success, but felt trapped in a life that was void of meaning and purpose. But this experience changed my life. It brought about a fresh perspective, a view that I had not seen before. That was four years ago. My journal and workbook are still with me all of the time, and I reflect on the goals that have been accomplished since the retreat. My long-term vision remains, clearly in front of me as I continue to create new goals that are congruent with this vision
